If you retain your [ NAME HERE ] service, digital signals will be automatically converted to analog so that you can view programming on your analog television – just as you always have. In fact, [ NAME HERE ] already converts many signals to digital.
Analog televisions will continue to work as long as they are directly connected to [ NAME HERE ]. Devices such as VCR’s, DVD players, camcorders, and gaming systems will also continue to function normally.
If you receive over-the-air signals with a roof-top or rabbit ears antenna, you will need a set-top digital converter box to continue to watch television on your analog TV. You will need an individual box for each television you want to receive a picture and any devices that use an analog tuner, such as an analog-only VCR.
The federal government is currently distributing up to two digital converter box coupons per household worth $40. The anticipated cost of the box is between $50 and $70 and it is available for purchase in local stores. You can request a digital converter box coupon until March 31, 2009 while supplies last. To apply online, by phone, mail or fax, visit www.dtv2009.gov.
Other options include subscribing to cable or satellite service or buying a new television with a built-in digital tuner.
If you own a television with a built-in digital tuner or a digital-ready monitor with a digital tuner set-top box, you do not need a digital converter box. Your roof-top or rabbit ears antenna will continue to work as before but will only receive the new digital signals.
If you’re not sure whether your television has an analog or digital tuner, refer to the owner’s manual or visit the manufacturer’s website to search your television model number.
Generally, your current antenna should continue to provide reception. If your antenna does not adequately receive UHF signals (channels 14 and above), you may need to purchase a new antenna or add a UHF section to your existing antenna.
